WELCOME TO THE RYF TRAVEL CLUB SPECIAL EASTER RIDE

NOTE:  Please scroll to the bottom of this page
to receive all information on today's rides.

Members are asked to register for this event in order for RYF to know
who is planning to join us for the ride, or possibly swim for some members.
Members will be asked to indicate whether they will ride the shorter 33 mile ride or longer 66 mile ride,
and indicate their ability to swim long distances in the ocean.
This is an once-in-a-lifetime, off the beaten path riding experience, so don't miss it.
Riders will not be required to carry a route slip since there are very few turns,
however, route slips and maps are available for those who may wish to use them.
Riders should carry a navigational compass as visibility may be hampered due to fog.

We encourage members to form car pools from Redlands to Newport Beach.
Please let us know if you have room available in your vehicle for passengers and pontoon bikes,
plus all necessary ocean gear, including water wings, wetsuits, life preservers, emergency beacons,
nighttime running lights, shark repellent, etc. Some extra food and plenty of fresh water is also a necessity.
We will plan to meet at the IYBI Clinic at 7:00 am. for those using car pools and
leave for the Catalina Flyer Terminal in Newport by 7:15 am.

Here is a time lapse sample of the route from Newport to Catalina!

The shorter 33 mile ride will start with a a boat ride on the Catalina Flyer to Avalon.
The Catalina Flyer to Avalon leaves Newport at 9:00 am and passengers must arrive
no later than 8:30 am to purchase tickets and get all gear on board.
The shorter bike ride will then start in Avalon Harbor and return to Newport Harbor.
The longer 66 mile bike ride will start at Newport Harbor and ride to Avalon, then return to Newport.

Here is a sample of the fun we will have today!

The ride will traverse the Catalina Channel and sail over the 2,000+ foot deep San Gabriel Canyon,
with strong currents and some depths nearing 2,440 feet just north of Avalon Knoll.
Bring your camera to capture photos of a variety of exotic sea life including Great White Sharks,
Humpback Whales, Leopard Seals, Stinging Jellyfish, Manta Rays, Barracuda, Morey Eels, and Giant Squid.

Category G - Sloshing Pace

Average speed 2 to 4 mph, with cruising speeds considering routine swells and wind between 1 to 5 mph. This ride will have some stops to regroup as necessary due to rough seas with high waves and blowing ocean spray at the discretion of the Route Leader, as long as the channel currents don't take us further out to sea.  Estimated transit time is 11+ hours.
